V.S.V should stop critiquing Carnatic music...

Could it be a print mistake?

These days I notice that even some of the most reputable magazines in India..don't have good proof readers!

Subha You should take into consideration telugu speaking users like me

subha - I respectfully disagree with you.

I have not gotten the latest issue of vikatan in hand, so cannot comment on that....

whether its a spelling mistake (or) genuinely VSV is toasted, I dont know....for example, even in your writing you had used a word wrong

can I say based on that you dont know Tamil ?

VSV's opinion is not just his opinion....its the prevailing audience opinion....What TM Krishna did, conservative connoisseur's of carnatic music couuld not digest....

one another nuisance that only TM Krishna does predominantly is -- in a 2 hour concert, he gives a 30 minute "chance"...thats primarily because, his guru Karaikudi mani is the mridangam player....justified? ask the audience....

there is a lot in a "thani" but nothing justifies a 25% of concert time...

venue and audience decide the victory of a singer....I believe both of them were wrong for TM Krishna to sing like that and later say "what is wrong?" when questioned...what is next -- a raagam thaanam pallavi as opener?

in your prior post you mentioned TM Krishna sang huseni in "chinnam chiru kiliyae" and someone correctly corrected you....can I say you dont know carnatic music ?

again - I am writing with sincerity, not to showcase your mistakes....or justify VSV....if you believe he is wrong, he is wrong, nothing I am going to say is going to set it right....

VSV is a very senior person...having talked to him, I can say he is no joke....he may not be the rank of a subbudu, but someone who has to be respected...

too much at stake here...

narayanan sir, it could be in which case editors are to be blamed. But I've seen other cases in VSV's writing where he goes to extremes in his criticism..doesn't seem to be balanced.

Ganesh sir,

I know I make a lot of mistakes in my writing but then, my blog is not the equivalent of a large publication like Vikatan. And I am no pro at writing..TM Krishna might have a lot of quirks that some people like/dislike..but the extent to which VSV had critiqued him last year for singing Viribhoni as the main piece seemed unjustified. There was no other argument presented other than that it was not "tradition".

I've never met VSV and he might be quite a knowledgeable person in Carnatic music. But I've not been impressed so far with his writing or his taste. That could be because I am very ignorant of music or writing too..:)

Hmm..
idellam the so called 'experts' problem...

I can think of equivalent examples in cricket commentary..

For e.g Mohinder amarnath ellam konjam kooda manasaatchiye illama present team oda running between the wickets pathi pesaradhu...

Ganesh Venkittu,
There are a couple of things you mentioned in your comments that I think is unacceptable.
1. conservative connoisseur's of carnatic music couuld not digest....

There cannot be any conservatism in appreciating art form. This is not religion or belief to be conservative. This is art form. So I dont agree to your labling of audience as conservative or non-conservative.
2. Thani avarthanam as "chance" and having 25% for that and mentioning that as not justified.

A person at the stature of Guru KRM does not need a chance to prove himself anymore. Second what is wrong in having a thani for 25%. If you cannot understand rythm you are very welcome to leave. But for people who enjoy it, it is a pleasure. I know heck a lot of people who flock to kutcheris because of KRM and Ummayalapuram Sivaraman is on the mridangam.
