Yesterday night, K was talking about his friends network. He said that almost every other person his friends know happens to be his classmate/friend/acquaintance either through school or college. How lucky! I've never been in one school for more than 4 years. I've been in and out of all sorts of places-cities/towns/mofussils.Sometimes places challenge you to change your perspective. The one thing I always used to hate about moving was that I had to adjust and make friends all over again. The change (at that time) was painful but in retrospect, very interesting and rewarding. I've had all sorts of experiences and got to meet different people, places and cultures.
I guess the downside is that I can't talk about friends' friends and school alumni like Kay does. I always used to feel envious when two totally unrelated people started talking casually and suddenly they'd say, "hey, unakku avanai theriyuma? namma senior.."..I think that's a great feeling.
There are lots of people who envy me and say they'd rather have spent their childhood traveling than be in one place. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

"The one thing I always used to hate about moving was that I had to adjust and make friends all over again." - So true. I am in a similar situation. Yesterday, after coming home, I was telling Kay about how we have to start the whole thing again. Its like coming again to the US (for the first time without knowing anything, anybody).

dad in a bank job?

it was the case with me.. i studied in 5 schools in all sorts of towns.. cd never call anyone a childhood friend as i lost touch with them in the childhood itself... but then, it gave lotsa lessons in adaptability.

some of my chennai based frenz used to say "parava illa.. nee village life ellam paathirukke".. grass is always greener at the other side.

yeah chakra sampath, dad in a bank job! Yeah, I guess I am much more adaptable and I've seen a lot but then sometimes I wonder, is it worth it?????!!!! Would I trade a great childhood friend for all this????

i have no probs going to a new place...but i need one person, just ONE whom i know and i'll not feel i'm at a new place!!!

Hi Subha! don't lament. It is a blessing in disguise.Even close childhood pals don't communicate with each other after marriage or relocation to another country etc I am also a classic example of not only in schools and colleges but also in work places whch had enabled me to meet scores of people make friends with them. After all the world is too small. The joke is that 2 people who were there in Antartica for an expedition along with Americans,Germans,Russians and Australians though met everyday in their snow-proof dress could not talk to or identify the Nationality. In the last lap when it was warm oneday, casting off their dress and attired intheir native dress the 2 men started asking where R U from?1 said India and the 2nd said he was also from India. The conversation continued only for a few minutes and to their surprise (Not ours!)they were from south and related too.
That is all how it goes.

I can partly relate to that - Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya at Trichy (in Thennur), Kendriya Vidyalaya at Fort Station, near Woraiyur, and from then on Chennai vaasam where initially I was at KV, Royappettah which then went to Gill Nagar (and I didn't follow), then National English School at Gopalapuram (6 years) and finally P.S. at Mylapore (11th and 12th). But I had good friends at every place, none of whom unfortunately followed me to college (except 2) and the one guy at college who was not such a close friend became one after I reached here (since he was my senior at Drexel and helped me with my financial aid that played a major role in my getting a visa).

Vani, what you say is true. If there is one person whom one knows, then it wouldn't be so bad...but oftentimes, finding even that one person is haaaaaaaaard.......!!!!!

Glad to see that there are other kindred spirits out there! you know, guys, I really envy those who grow up in one place and go to school and college in the same place. I think it is great to grow up with people...

hey subha
u r right...its nice to know ur friend through another friend of yours..a sense of happiness is there...but,

kudos to your patience to adjust and adapt to all people in every place u have lived. Many of us have the fear of facing something new and unfamiliar. But for getting rid of this fear,we cannot explore many things and gain wisdom.I appreciate you.

u know guys, i have got something in life which u all can be really envious about.I have been to the same school for 14 years right from my KG classes up till 12th.It was a joyous experience and never did i feel like bunking a class.True , it was a home away from home.Very emotionally attached to my school and school buddies.
u know sometimes, even after a long stay and search, u dont get good friends and end up in vain. But, short time acquaintances do turn out to be good friends,
So, wish u happy times enduring change.
